2017 Volvo S90 R-Design arrives from $100,900

The 2017 Volvo S90 R-Design has quietly joined the local range, starting from $100,900 before on-road costs.

Sporting more aggressive styling and the punchier T6 petrol powertrain - which develops a healthy 235kW of power and 400Nm of torque - the S90 T6 R-Design is the Swedish firm's entrant to duel with the likes of the BMW 540i and Mercedes-Benz E400.

Equipment highlights include, 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, R-Design bodykit, four-zone climate control, 12.3-inch digital driver's display, perforated nappa leather seat trim, perforated leather R-Design three-spoke steering wheel and gear shift, carbon-fibre decor inlays, paddle shifters, power-adjustable front seats with electric lumbar support and driver's memory function, and matte silver side mirror housings.

The turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre petrol engine develops 235kW of power at 5700rpm and 400Nm between 2200rpm and 5400rpm, and drive is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

In terms of performance, the T6 R-Design claims a 5.9-second sprint from zero to 100km/h, while fuel use is rated at 7.5 litres per 100km.

Compared to its rivals, the BMW 540i does the benchmark sprint in a more spritely 5.1 seconds with its 250kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six, while the 245kW/480Nm all-wheel-driven Mercedes-Benz E400 sprints from 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds.

However, the Volvo starts at between $35,000 and $40,000 less than the Beemer and the Benz.

The Volvo S90 T6 R-Design is on sale now.
