Toyota to launch G’s performance brand mid year

It may be having a tough time with its product recalls in the US and Europe at the moment, but the wheels never stop turning at Toyota. You may remember the FT-86 G Sport's concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon we showed you a few weeks ago.

The story mentioned the imminent roll out of cars under the G Sports namesake. Further to this, you may have noticed the G's logo on both the FT-86 concept as well as the Prius G Sports concepts.

According to reports, G's will be the name of Toyota's in-house tuning division.

Set to launch mid-2010, the G's division will not only tune for street use, it will also allow user level of customisation to tailor a specific package, unlike in-house tuning brands such as AMG, BMW's M and Lexus's F which use set packages. Everything will be customisable - interior, exterior and mechanical. Complete conversions of existing products is said to be G's goal.

It has been pointed out that Toyota already has its motorsports division, TRD, which mainly supplies upgrade parts, but perhaps this new approach is what Toyota needs to garner interest in a performance brand.

If the FT-86 concept is anything to go by, Toyota is starting in the right direction with its G's launch.
