2018 Toyota Camry unveiled with TRD and Modellista variants

We'd already seen the 2018 Toyota Camry - but that vehicle was the one developed for the North American market. Here you see the 2018 Toyota Camry in Japanese domestic market spec: in other words, the version that'll be sold here from late this year.

There are minor visual changes between the model seen here and the North American version, including different front bumpers and headlight inlays (with clear indicator lenses rather than the amber tinted ones on the US models), and tail-lights with marginally different lenses.

Most interestingly, however, are two new models that could add some pizzazz to the Camry range: the TRD and the Modellista.

These two stylised variants are fitted with unique body kit: the TRD with a bold lower splitter with integrated daytime running lights and large five-spoke alloy wheels, while the Modellista appears to have a more prestige focus, with multi-spoke alloys and a marginally more subtle front bumper treatment. There are just so many lines, it's kind of hard to tell if its subtler or not.

It's worth noting that none of Toyota's JDM versions shown here have the two-tone roof finish that really caught the eyes of onlookers at the 2017 Detroit motor show where the new Camry debuted. We'd expect the two-tone trim will be offered in Australia, as it is on the C-HR: but as with that small SUV, the TRD and Modellista trim packs may not be sold here (check out the C-HR style kits).

The new pictures also give our first look at the new-gen Camry with a steering wheel on the correct side of the car. As the image suggests, Toyota will move away from the tablet-style media system protruding from the dashboard in favour of a flush-fit screen. It remains unknown what we can expect in terms of tech, but we can only hope that the brand will add extended smartphone connectivity like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

As we've reported previously, Australian Camry models will have the choice of three drivetrains: a new 3.5-litre direct-injection V6 with an eight-speed automatic, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, and a four-cylinder hybrid. Yep, with the new-generation Camry, Australia will say goodbye to the V6-powered Aurion.

Unlike our American cousins though, we’ll only be seeing the new 2.5-litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine in hybrid variants, at least initially: the volume-selling Camry will soldier on with today’s 2.5-litre engine.

The eighth-generation Camry is built on the brand's New Generation Architecture, and is expected to be lighter, more efficient and more dynamic than the previous model, not to mention easier to get into and out of.

Stay tuned for our first drive review of the new-generation Camry in the coming weeks.
