Shelby reveals Mustang Super Snake concept, F-150 Super Snake

The 2017 Shelby Super Snake widebody concept and Shelby F-150 Super Snake have been revealed this week, both packing supercharged V8 power and eye-catching bodywork.

For the first time on the current-generation Mustang platform, Shelby has created a widebody concept which adds an array of performance-oriented options including a more aggressive wheel and tyre package - with 12.5-inch-wide Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rear (345) and 11-inch (305) front tyres housing 20-inch rims.

Painted in Lightning Blue, the wide-bodied Shelby Super Snake Mustang also features Shelby-spec track suspension, rear lower control arms and a Brembo brake system with 16-inch front- and 14-inch rear rotors, with six piston calipers at the front and four piston calipers at the rear.

Under the bonnet is the same 5.0-litre supercharged V8 found in other Super Snake derivatives, tuned to develop a whopping 750 horsepower (559kW). In the 'regular' Shelby Super Snake Mustang with the same tune, 0-60mph (96km/h) takes just 3.5 seconds.

The Super Snake widebody is the first concept introduced by Shelby American for over a decade, and has been primarily developed to make the tuned Mustang more accomplished on the race track.

"Adding approximately four inches to the car’s rear track and two and half to the front, opened up new opportunities to maximise handling," said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations.

"The fully adjustable coilover suspension and the enormous Brembo braking system, along with wider wheels and tires significantly change the car’s driving dynamics. This provides more grip for later braking and earlier acceleration out of corners."

Meanwhile, the company has also revealed the limited-run F-150 Super Snake, based on the popular Ford F-150 pick-up.

Powered by the same 750hp (559kW) supercharged 5.0-litre V8, the F-150 Super Snake will be offered in both two- and four-wheel drive versions, starting at US$96,880 ($130,332).

Shelby hasn't revealed performance claims for the muscle truck, though you can expect it to get along quite briskly.

Standard equipment include 22-inch chrome wheels with 305/45 R22 performance tyres, fender flares, active front fender vents, Shelby striping and badging, painted tonneau cover, dark-tinted windows, Shelby carpet floor mats, and Super Snake embroidery on the head rests.

Other features include a Borla dual-exhaust system, Shelby suspension tune, a carbon-fibre intake tube, and a dual-intake 'Ram Air' Shelby bonnet.

Just 150 of the Super Snake trucks will be produced, each coming with a three-year, 36,000 mile (57,936km) warranty.
