2017 BMW 2 Series revealed ahead of September launch

An updated version of the BMW 2 Series coupe and convertible will arrive in Australia in late September this year, at the same time as the similarly upgraded 1 Series hatch.

The minor mid-cycle upgrade to the smallest BMW sports car is in line with the Bavarian company’s strategy of making continuous, incremental changes to its model lines.

Headline changes include the adoption of Bi-LED headlights by all variants — full LEDs on higher grades — a bigger kidney grille and revised front intake design.

There are also more alloy wheel designs to choose from, plus three new colours have been added as options: Mediterranean Blue, Seaside Blue and Sunset Orange.

Cabin changes include a new instrument panel, nicer stitching, a new gloss-black fascia cover, redesigned air vents, more driver-focused geometry, new window switches and a sliding cover for the front cup holders.

As with the 1 Series upgrade, the iDrive infotainment system has an in-built SIM card and ConnectedDrive services as standard.

Some of these extended net-based features include concierge services, real-time traffic information with hazard preview, and access to the BMW Connected smartphone app – where users can track vehicle information and remotely lock/unlock their vehicle via their mobile device.

Features by variant include a WiFi hotspot and Apple CarPlay, along with the larger Navigation Professional system – which also adds a touchscreen for the 8.8-inch display.

The updated range also adds new driver assistance options such as adaptive cruise control with stop/go function, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) which works at speeds of up to 60km/h (37mph) and can also detect pedestrians and motorcycles.

The powertrain changes introduced last year carry over here, meaning Australia will keep the familiar 220i, 230i, M240i and M2 variations.

The 2 Series remains enduringly popular in Australia, with 699 sold this year so far to make it the second most popular sports car here after the Ford Mustang. It’s even outsold the Toyota 86.
