2018 BMW 1 Series update spied

An updated version of the current-generation BMW 1 Series hatchback has been spied testing in Germany.

Last week we published spy photos of the next-generation 1 Series hatch, which will likely be revealed towards the end of next year or the beginning of 2019.

Before the new front- and all-wheel drive 1 Series enters showrooms, it seems BMW is planning to give the current rear-wheel drive model one last refresh.

The second update for the current 1 Series isn't anywhere near as dramatic as the 2015 facelift, which included restyled bumpers, lights and tailgate.

As the prototype has just a little bit of disguise tape around the head- and tail-lights, and grille, visible changes may be limited to new headlamp internals, lighting graphics and grille inserts.

BMW may take this opportunity to update the 1 Series' engines, as well as its suite of technology and safety features. Expect tweaks to the car's pricing and specifications to keep the 1 Series competitive until the new third-generation model is released.

With so little disguise on the car, it's likely the updated 1 Series will appear in the not-too-distant future, certainly before or at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
