2017 Audi A5 Coupe pricing and specs

The 2017 Audi A5 Coupe range has arrived in Australia, with the four-ring brand offering plenty of kit for its two-door, four-seat, style-focused model.

The three-model Audi A5 range will start off from an attractive $69,900 (all prices plus on-road costs) for the entry-level front-drive 2.0TFSI petrol, while the other petrol 2.0TFSI quattro bookmarks the line-up at the upper end, priced at $81,500. The only diesel model in the range is the 2.0TDI quattro, at $73,900.

For context, that places the base model $1000 higher than its 1.8-litre CVT auto front-drive predecessor, while the 2.0 TFSI quattro used to cost $75,395, and the 2.0TDI previously was a bit dearer ($76,255).

This time around, there's no 3.0-litre turbo diesel version, but Audi Australia has suggested the book isn't closed on such a model being offered in the future.

The new models, though, have seen improvements to their engines, with more power and torque across the range, and better efficiency thanks to those new engines and the fact the models are all lighter than their predecessors. The new versions are based on the company's modular platform, which also underpins the new-generation Audi A4.

The 2.0-litre turbo petrol entry-level model has 140kW of power from 4200-6000rpm and 320Nm of torque from 1450-5200rpm.

The entry model's claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds is more than a second faster than the car it replaces, and instead of the CVT it has a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, as do all A5 models. It's still front-drive, though. Fuel use is claimed at 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres, down from 6.0L/100km in the existing model.

The higher-spec petrol model with all-wheel drive has a higher state of tune, with its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder churning out 185kW of power at 5000-6000rpm and 370Nm from 1600-4500rpm. Audi claims it’ll sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.8sec – down 0.6sec on the model it replaces – while the claimed fuel use is just 6.5L/100km, down 0.6L.

The diesel all-wheel-drive variant has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 140kW (from 3800-4200rpm) and 400Nm (from 1750-3000rpm), and fuel use is a miserly 4.6L/100km according to Audi, which is down 0.7L. Audi claims the new model's punchy diesel engine allows it a sprint time of 7.2 seconds.

Standard equipment is extensive, including Audi's Virtual Cockpit 12.3-inch driver information/media/nav/trip unit fitted in all models at no cost, while the 8.3-inch dash-top infotainment screen with MMI Touch rotary dial controller features plenty of goodies like Google Maps display, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, dual USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Audi Connect mobile internet capabilities.

Standard safety kit on the A5 coupe range is extensive, and includes a rear-view camera, parking sensors all around, city autonomous emergency braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, tyre pressure monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert.

There's also an exit warning system that will alert you by using the ambient lighting in the door if there's a car/motorbike/cyclist coming up beside you, and six airbags (dual front, front side, full-length curtains). It has received the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, too.

Audi is offering a range of options packs for buyers to choose, as well, including:

  • S line Style package, with exterior bumper and sill extensions, 19-inch alloys (on the two lower-spec cars), illuminated door sills, tinted rear glass – $3900 for base models, $2500 for quattro petrol
  • S line Sport package, includes Style package and adds Nappa leather trim, black headlining, stainless steel pedals, S line flat-bottom steering wheel, brushed aluminium inlays – $7400 for base models, $5900 for quattro petrol
  • Technik package, with head-up display, Matrix LED headlights, Bang & Olufsen sound system – $5600
  • Assistance package, with adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, active lane keeping, high-speed AEB, turn assist (will prevent you from turning in front of oncoming traffic), distance warning, predictive efficiency assistance (monitors GPS data and adjusts engine for hills, corners), and high-beam assist – $2470
