2017 Honda Civic Type R touches down in Melbourne

The new 2017 Honda Civic Type R has made its Australian debut, but don't expect to drive away in one anytime soon: it won't be on sale until later this year.

Belgian racer Stoffel Vandoorne was on hand for today's showcase, which also featured the first local appearance of the Civic RS hatch.

Honda Australia chief Stephen Collins, also present for the Type R's first local appearance, said the debut of these models showed the company now has "distinct models to suit the diverse Honda Civic customer base" - although those simply wanting a manual-equipped Civic will have to spend big for the Type R.

But, for those that do buy in, a 235kW and 400Nm four-cylinder turbocharged rocket awaits them.

Full Australian details for the new Type R are still to be revealed, with Honda promising to hand down more information as its fourth-quarter launch draws near.

A price tag to rival the Ford Focus RS is expected, which should put it at around the $50,000 mark.
