Mercedes-AMG E43 goes operational with Victoria Police – UPDATE

Update - Victoria Police have issued a statement regarding the potential for Mercedes-AMG models to replace the current high-performance fleet of locally-made vehicles. See bottom of article for details

Victoria Police has welcomed the Mercedes-AMG E43 to its highway patrol fleet. The new operational prowler, dubbed the 'Guardian V2', was revealed this week at Victoria's Towards Zero Road Safety Conference 2017.

Replacing last year's Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe patrol car, the AMG E43 is on loan to the Victorian police force for the next year and will play a role in highlighting the importance of safety systems in new cars.

"Our partnership with Mercedes-Benz is about highlighting safety features in vehicles; we want to be part of the discussion around what safer cars look like and know that having the Guardian V2 out and about in the community does this," said Doug Fryer, road policing command assistant commissioner.

"We know that three out of four deaths on country roads happen in cars that are older than 10 years and that a new car will stay on our roads for about 20 years."

"All we are asking is that you consider safety for your car as an investment, an investment in the safety of yourself and for your family, it shouldn’t be an optional extra," he added.

The AMG E43 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, developing 295kW of power and 520Nm of torque, sent to all-four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

It's capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

Those wanting a non-police version of the AMG E43 will need to shell out $159,900 before on-road costs.

Despite this being the second Mercedes-AMG vehicle to be used as an operational highway patrol vehicle in the Victoria Police fleet, authorities are staying quiet on whether they are considering the German performance models to replace locally-made models like the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo and Holden Commodore SS once Australian vehicle manufacturing ends.

Update: Victoria Police issued the following statement with regards to Mercedes-AMG vehicles replacing locally-made high-performance models like the Falcon XR6 Turbo and Commodore SS:

"Victoria Police is going through a process to evaluate a range of vehicles that manufacturers are offering to meet our operational needs.

We continue to consider a range of vehicle manufacturers including those we have long worked with. Victoria Police has a range of operational needs and we encourage all vehicle suppliers to consider what they can offer to support Policing to the Victorian community. There is great opportunity to deliver more integrated solutions for policing through technology and innovation which Victoria Police would welcome.

As part of the process we have been working with industry to develop a ‘police pack’ which would be factory fitted. A decision on which vehicles will be used as highway patrol vehicles in 2018 is not expected until later in the year.

We are confident that the replacement vehicles we select will meet our safety and performance standards as they will have been subjected to the evaluation tests that underpin our vehicle safety classification system."
