2017 Honda CR-V seven-seater teased in Thailand

Three rows, diesel power for new-generation SUV

The next-generation 2017 Honda CR-V has been teased in Thailand, with seven seats and a turbo-diesel engine.

As reported by Paul Tan's Automotive News in Malaysia, the new CR-V teased during the Thai launch of the Civic hatch differs slightly from the recently-revealed US-market model, which is five seats only and doesn't offer the option of a diesel mill.

The oiler in question is Honda's 'Earth Dreams' 1.6-litre i-DTEC turbo-diesel engine, developing 119kW of power and 350Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This engine was offered briefly in Australia, in the current-generation CR-V DTi-L Limited Edition.

Scheduled to land in the Land of Smiles on March 29, the next-generation Japanese crossover is due locally in the third quarter of this year, though it's still unknown whether Australia will get both the five- and seven-seat configurations.

Last December, director of Honda Australia, Stephen Collins, told CarAdvice that declining sales had moved the company to rule out diesel power for the local market.

However, the company's Australian arm hasn't confirmed whether it will bring both the naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre petrol and 142kW 1.5-litre turbo available in the US.

New features in the fifth-generation CR-V include active grille shutters, LED head- and tail-lights, and a new 7.0-inch infotainment system complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

In the US, the updated SUV offers a range of new driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control - though it's unconfirmed if and which of these technologies will be available here.

Honda's local arm has confirmed the new CR-V will offer a "full range" of models when it arrives later this year, "including front- and all-wheel drive".

However, whether that includes seven-seat variants to compete with the Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is still a mystery.

The 1.6-litre turbo-diesel has also been ruled out for our market.
