Audi Q4 confirmed for 2019 launch

The Audi Q4, a new addition to the brand's ever-growing selection of crossover vehicles, has been confirmed for launch in 2019.

Described as a "sporty compact utility vehicle", the Q4 will be a sporty companion to the next-generation Q3, likely due to launch in 2018. The Q4's launch will follow on the heels of new generations of the A8, Q5 and A5 this year, and the second-generation A7 and all-new Q8 in 2018.

The Q8 has been extensively previewed, first by the Q8 Concept at the Detroit motor show in January, and then the Q8 Sport Concept at the Geneva motor show in March.

Unlike many product confirmation announcements, the Q4's launch date wasn't proclaimed at a launch event, motor show or some similarly ritzy gala production.

Instead, it was buried at the end of an innocuous paragraph of a press release titled "Audi sets strategic path in challenging year 2016", which paints the Dieselgate-tainted 2016 in a more positive light and points Audi forward to brighter, more electric path.

The Q4 won't be only new addition to Audi Q range, with Rupert Stadler confirming to CarAdvice at the recent Geneva motor show that there will also be a Q5-based Q6 model too, although timing for that vehicle has yet to be confirmed.

Up until early last year, the Q4 trademark was owned by Fiat Chrysler (FCA) in many jurisdictions. In January 2016, Audi and FCA came to agreement that would allow Audi to use both the Q2 and Q4 on future models.
