Citroen C5 Aircross sketched ahead of Shanghai debut

New SUV to replace ageing sedan and wagon

The upcoming Citroen C5 Aircross SUV has been teased in sketches ahead of its debut at this year's Shanghai motor show in April.

Released shortly after the presentation of the C-Aircross concept in Geneva - which is believed to preview the SUV-styled replacement for the C3 Picasso MPV - the renderings of the C5 Aircross closely resemble the Citroen Aircross concept that was shown at the 2015 Shanghai motor show.

Few details of the new crossover have been released, though it's likely the new SUV will be launched sometime next year, primarily targeting the Chinese market.

Last year, a report by the UK's Autocar quoted Citroen's product boss, Xavier Peugeot, hinting that the next-generation C4 and C5 would morph into crossover vehicles rather than the current hatch, sedan/wagon offerings.

"It’s clear that we want to be a mainstream player, and to do that, we need to cover the various segments,” he said. “So yes, we want a Citroen offering in the D (medium) segment where the C5 currently is," he said.

"But would it be a direct successor to the C5? I’m not sure."

It's likely the C5 Aircross will make use of current underpinnings and powertrains offered by the PSA Group, with the most logical assumption being the EMP2 platform that also underpins the new Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs - set to arrive in Australia later this year.

Should that be the case, the C5 Aircross should feature a similar engine line-up to its Peugeot-badged cousins, including a range of four-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel units.

Stay tuned for an update during our coverage of the Shanghai motor show next month.
