2018 McLaren 720S: 400 orders already taken for all-new 650S replacement

Like the look of the all-new McLaren 720S revealed for the first time at the 2017 Geneva motor show? Well it seems plenty do, with the UK supercar maker confirming it’s already taken some 400 orders for the car that succeeds the already blisteringly fast 650S in McLaren’s Super Series performance tier.

Speaking to CarAdvice at the 2017 Geneva motor show, McLaren Automotive global communications and public relations director Wayne Bruce said the initial response to the car has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We’ve been showing the car in private previews to customers now for a few weeks, and we have already taken 400 orders for the car globally,” Bruce said.

“So if you want one, I suggest you hurry up,” the PR head said with a smile.

Bruce said while there’s no set production limit on the car per se, McLaren Automotive’s Woking facility is expected to produce 1200 720Ss this year, with a maximum of 1500 units to be produced in 2018.

Priced locally from $489,900 (before on-road costs), Bruce said he hopes Australian delivers will begin in the next few months, following production kicking off “very soon”.

Powered by a new twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, the 529kW/770Nm McLaren 720S claims 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds, 0-200km/h in 7.8 seconds, and a top speed of 341km/h.

For reference, the 650S costs $464,000 in Australia, is powered by a 478kW/678Nm twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8, and claims 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds and 0-200km/h in 8.4 seconds.
