2017 World Car of the Year categories culled to three finalists

The World Car of the Year committee has announced the top three vote recipients in each of this year's categories.

With the second round of voting completed by this year's World Car of the Year jurists, all that remains is for the awards to handed out at the New York motor show in April.

The big prize, the 2017 World Car of the Year, will go to a European marque, with the three finalists being the Audi Q5, Jaguar F-Pace, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

A similar situation exists in the 2017 World Luxury Car of the Year category, with the final list whittled down to the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Volvo S90/V90.

The last three contenders for the 2017 World Performance Car of the Year prize are the Audi R8 Spyder, McLaren 570S, and Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman.

Despite the Continent's keener focus on environmental issues, the 2017 World Green Car of the Year will be fought out between one Japanese and two American cars, with the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model X, and Toyota Prius Prime accumulating the most votes in the category.

The 94Ah BMW i3, Citroen C3, and Suzuki Ignis are still in the ring for the first ever World Urban Car of the Year trophy.

Lastly, but definitely not least, tongues will definitely start wagging if the Toyota C-HR manages to beat out the Jaguar F-Pace and Mercedes-Benz S-Class cabriolet to the title of the 2017 World Car Design of the Year prize.
