Spyker C8 Preliator Spyder unveiled with new Koenigsegg V8 engine

The Spyker C8 Preliator Spyder and a Koenigsegg-designed-and-built V8 engine were unveiled at the 2017 Geneva motor show.

The new Spyker C8 Preliator Spyder has a carbon-fibre body, semi-automatic soft-top with a manually operated centre latch, a leather-laden interior, and a gesture controlled head-up display.

Riding on 19-inch mirror-finish alloy wheels and a Lotus-developed suspension setup, the C8 Preliator Spyder has 235/35 tyres up front and 295/35 rubber at the rear.

Taking centre stage alongside the convertible was a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 from Koenigsegg. The dry sump engine makes 447kW of power at 7100rpm, and 600Nm of torque at 5700rpm, and will be paired with a rear-mounted six-speed manual transmission.

That's good enough to propel the Preliator Spyder from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds, and onwards to a top speed of 322km/h.

In a note of defiance and none-too-subtle market positioning, Spyker notes: "This is the only 600 horsepower series produced sports car available with a manual gearbox on the market today. Although our peers believe the manual is virtually dead, and many have vowed we would never see them again, our discerning clients have clearly spoken out in favour of the manual."

The new Koenigsegg engine replaces the supercharged 4.2-litre Audi V8 that had been previously specified for the C8 Preliator coupe, and which developed 386kW of power at 6800rpm and 600Nm of torque at 3500rpm.

Thanks to the change in engine suppliers, the first C8 Preliator coupes aren't due to enter production until the last quarter of 2017.

Manufacture of the new C8 Preliator Spyder will begin in the northern summer of 2018 at CPP Metalcraft's factory in Coventry, UK, and output will be limited to just 100 units.
