Techrules Ren: Turbine-recharged electric supercar revealed

The Techrules Ren that was unveiled and on display at the 2017 Geneva motor show is not only the Chinese research and development company's first production vehicle, but also the first to feature a turbine range-extender system.

The Ren's body was designed by Fabrizio and Giorgetto Giugiaro, and will be available in one-, two-, and three-seat versions, each with a different polycarbonate canopy.

Measuring 4694mm long, 2048mm wide, 1200mm wide, and riding on a 2734mm wheelbase, the Techrules Ren has a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis.

The Techrules Ren will be available with three drivetrain choices, with the range-topping version featuring two electric YASA motors at the front and four at the rear. Together they will generate a total of 960kW of power and 2340Nm of torque.

This will enable the 1630kg top-spec Ren to fly from 0-100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and hit a top speed of 320km/h.

Equipped with twin 80kW turbines to recharge the 25kWh battery pack, Techrules says that the range-topping Ren has a range of 1170km from an 80-litre tank of diesel fuel.

The base model will have two electric motors across the rear axle generating a total of 320kW/780Nm, while the mid-spec car will have two motors at the front and two at the rear making a total of 640kW/1560Nm.

Lower-spec models will be equipped with either one or two 30kW turbines, and can potentially have a range of up to 2000km on a full tank of fuel. Buyers can choose between 14kWh, 25kWh and 32kWh batteries.

Techrules is targeting an electric-only driving range of around 200km.

The Ren's cabin features a wing-shaped dashboard, lots of leather and faux suede, and seat centres fitted with denim by Pantaloni Torin.

Techrules has begun taking orders for the Ren, with production slated to begin in 2018. The Ren will be built by Techrules' engineering partner, Italy's LM Gianetti.
