McLaren 720S revealed in Geneva, 341km/h Super Series goes official – UPDATE

Update - McLaren's local arm has confirmed pricing and timing for the new 720S. See bottom of article for details

The new McLaren 720S has been officially revealed and detailed at the Geneva motor show this week, marking the second generation of the company's Super Series line.

Replacing the 650S, the 720S brings the Super Series in line with the brand's latest design language, while also debuting the company's new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8.

Developing 720PS (hence the name), or 529kW of power and 770Nm of torque channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 720S is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 2.9 seconds, 0-200km/h in 7.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 341km/h.

McLaren points out a key design difference with the new 720S is the absence of radiator intakes on the side of the car, with the function now carried out by the unique 'double skin' dihedral doors, which channel air into the radiators to cool the mid-mounted V8 engine.

Otherwise, the McLaren 720S looks very much like a member of the family, drawing upon the looks of the P1 hypercar along with the smaller Sports Series range, with its slim headlights and tail-lights, along with the curvy lines of the body.

Housed behind the 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels are carbon ceramic brakes, which can bring the 720S from 200km/h to a standstill in 4.6 seconds and 117m.

Under the skin is a new version of McLaren's Monocage carbon-fibre tub, along with a range of aluminium alloys used in the chassis and body panels to maximise rigidity and reduce weight.

Other highlights include the debut of the company's new Proactive Chassis Control system, along with new suspension and a power-assisted electro-hydraulic steering rack.

Inside, the hand-crafted interior sports a number of new features, including a folding driver's display - which offers a simple Formula One-style display or a full-digital instrument cluster - and a new portrait-style central infotainment system.

At launch the company will offer three trim levels; standard, Performance and Luxury trims, along with a range of option packages.

The McLaren 720S is available to order now in Europe starting at 208,600 pounds ($335,213) in the UK, with first deliveries expected to commence in May.

Australia

McLaren's local arm has confirmed the 720S is available to order now priced from $489,900 before on-road costs. First deliveries will arrive in Australia during the third quarter of 2017.
