2017 Audi RS5 Coupe revealed

V8 engine gone, but new model is faster than ever

The 2017 Audi RS5 Coupe has been unveiled at the 2017 Geneva motor show, with the second-generation sports coupe dropping its venerable V8 engine.

Under the bonnet of the all-new RS5 is a 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 petrol engine with 331kW - the same as the previous model - but with a huge 600Nm of torque, up 170Nm over the existing V8 naturally-aspirated model.

That torque figure hits across a broad band, from 1900-5000rpm, so the driving experience, it's fair to say, will be vastly different to the existing RS5, which had its 430Nm from 4000-6000rpm (and peak power at a soaring 8250rpm!).

The result of the thrusty new engine is a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.9 seconds, which is 0.8sec faster than its predecessor.

The top speed is 280km/h, and, as you'd expect, the engine utilises Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system (with a standard 40:60 split front and rear) and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The new model is expected to be offered with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) adaptive suspension, ceramic brakes and dynamic steering with RS-specific tuning, all of which may be options locally. There's also an optional rear sport differential.

The new model boasts a broader body than the standard A5 Coupe, with the RS model having seen its wheel arches bulked by an extra 15 millimetres overall. There are 'blisters' on the flanks that are said to help emphasise the width, while it also gets a sporty diffuser and the trademark oval tail-pipes of RS models.

Inside, the RS5 gets sculpted sports seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and the car's standard Virtual Cockpit screen for the driver features an RS theme. Other highlights include head-up display, all the safety aids you would expect, and Matrix LED headlights.

Australia

The all-new Audi RS5 Coupe will likely be in Audi showrooms in Australia late this year, with Audi Australia product communications manager Shaun Cleary saying the company is looking forward to its arrival.

"Obviously we're very excited to see the new RS5 Coupe in Australia," he said. "In its first generation we sold almost 500 locally, and with the new design by Audi design chief Marc Lichte, not to mention the technology of the all-new A5, we're really looking forward to seeing what it will bring as the flagship model in that range."

Put it on your Christmas list maybe?
