2017 Honda Civic Type R revealed in Geneva, here later this year

235kW Japanese hot hatch goes official

The new 2017 Honda Civic Type R has officially been revealed this week at the 2017 Geneva motor show, ahead of its Australian launch by year's end.

Looking very much like the concept that previewed it last year, the production version features an aggressive bodykit, large alloy wheels and a huge rear wing - watch out Subaru WRX STI.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing a meaty 235kW of power and 400Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels exclusively via a six-speed manual transmission.

The new Civic Type R features a Macpherson strut front suspension set up which has been revised over the standard Civic hatch to minimise torque steer and improve handling, while the independent multi-link system at the rear has been strengthened with unique high-rigidity suspension arms.

Also unique to the Type R are the three additional driving modes - Comfort, Sport and +R - each tailoring the adaptive dampers, steering weight, shift feel and throttle response accordingly.

In terms of aerodynamics, the new hardcore Civic features a smoother underbody, front air curtain and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roofline in addition to the bodykit and prominent rear wing, which Honda says helps to offer a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, contributing to greater high-speed stability.

The chassis is also more rigid than the previous model (that was never sold here), with the company claiming torsional rigidity is up by 38 per cent.

Production of the new Civic Type R will commence in the European summer at Honda's UK manufacturing facility in Swindon alongside regular versions of the Civic hatchback.

The Type R will be exported from the UK across Europe and to other markets globally, including the US, Japan and Australia.

It will also be the first Honda-badged Type R model in North America to be officially sold there, as opposed to wearing the Acura badge.

Honda has already confirmed the Civic Type R will arrive here before the end of the year, with full specifications for our market to be detailed closer to launch.

The company's local arm, however, has hinted that the new hot hatch will be priced around the $50,000 mark, putting it in direct competition with the Ford Focus RS, Subaru WRX STI and Volkswagen Golf R.
