Volkswagen Sedric concept revealed ahead of Geneva debut

Autonomous EV previews the company's vision for mobility in the future

The Volkswagen Sedric concept, looking like an old '80s Mac computer or a sidekick robot fresh out of Futurama, has been revealed ahead of its debut at the 2017 Geneva motor show this week.

Sedric (SElf DRiving Car) is a level five autonomous vehicle - meaning there is no need for a driver at all - and is the first concept to be branded under the Volkswagen Group and its cross-brand ideas platform.

Inside is a 2+2 seat interior with no driver's seat, which Volkswagen describes as a "comfortable lounge on wheels".

The windscreen is a giant OLED screen that can display augmented reality, and also serves as a communication and entertainment system.

Sedric can be summoned with 'The Button', an interpretation of the key fob which calls Sedric to your location at any time. A light ring around The Button indicates Sedric's arrival time with different colours or vibration signals - the latter for the visually impaired.

Details of what powers the concept are still unknown, though - no surprise - Volkswagen has confirmed that Sedric is an all-electric vehicle.

The company says autonomous vehicles are a key element of its future strategy, and Sedric will be the 'father' of numerous upcoming concepts that move away from the traditional forms of personal mobility.

Volkswagen adds that Sedric will also have 'children' and 'grandchildren' across the Group's various brands - which include Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda - and will be tailored to each brand in terms of design and equipment.
