Aston Martin Valkyrie: AM-RB 001 gets a new name in Geneva

Aston Martin and Red Bull's upcoming hypercar, the AM-RB 001, has been given a new name this week: Valkyrie.

Named after the legendary figures of Norse mythology - those who choose who lives and who dies in battle - the Valkyrie also continues the 'V' naming tradition that Aston Martin has used since 1951.

Styling chief Marek Reichman said the Valkyrie name perfectly captures the drama of what is not only the ultimate Aston Martin, but also the ultimate expression of hypercar design, engineering and performance.

"Aston Martin model names have deep meaning. They need to inspire and excite. To tell a story and enrich a narrative that stretches back some 104 years," he said.

"The Aston Martin Valkyrie is an incredibly special car that demands an equally remarkable name; an uncompromising car that leaves nothing in reserve."

"The connotations of power and honour, of being chosen by the Gods are so evocative, and so pertinent to a car that only a fortunate few will ever experience," he added.

Last month, Aston Martin confirmed the Valkyrie will be powered by a 6.5-litre V12 sourced from iconic British engine company, Cosworth, mated to a Formula One-derived hybrid system and a seven-speed paddle-shift transmission.

Other highlights include a battery system sourced from Rimac, high-performance carbon brakes supplied by Alcon and Surface Transforms, along with technology elements from German powerhouse Bosch.

Just 150 examples of the road-going Valkyrie will be built (including prototypes), while an additional 25 track-only editions will be produced.

First deliveries of the ultimate Aston Martin are set to commence in 2019.
