2018 Volkswagen Arteon liftback unveiled

The new Volkswagen Arteon five-door liftback has been revealed ahead of the 2017 Geneva motor show.

As seen in earlier teaser images, the Arteon has standard LED headlights that merge seamlessly into the grille, along with LED tail-lights.

Closely related to the Passat mid-sizer, the Arteon features completely unique exterior body work, although the dashboard seems to be carried over with a few upgrades.

Available features include alloy wheels ranging from 17- through to 20-inches in diameter, a customisable digital instrumentation display, a Discover Pro infotainment system with a 9.2-inch capacitive touchscreen and gesture controls, massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and active cruise control that uses information from the navigation system.

Based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB architecture for cars with transverse engines, and front- or all-wheel drive, the Arteon replaces the CC in Volkswagen range, and will be pitched as a sportier, more luxurious alternative to the Passat.

The Arteon is 4862mm long, 1871mm wide, 1427mm tall, and rides on a 2841mm wheelbase. Compared to the Passat sedan, the Arteon is 95mm longer overall, 39mm wider, has a roof that 29mm closer to the ground, and rides on a wheelbase that's 50mm longer.

In the boot, the liftback can store 563L worth of gear, and cargo carrying capacity expands to 1557L when the split-fold back seat is laid down.

In Europe, the Arteon will offered a choice of six four-cylinder engines.

On the turbocharged petrol side of the table are a 110kW 1.5-litre, along with 140kW and 206kW versions of the 2.0-litre motor. All petrol engines are paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with a six-speed manual available on the 1.5-litre, and all-wheel drive standard on the 206kW 2.0-litre.

For diesel buyers, the options are 110kW, 140kW and 176kW versions of the company's 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. Again a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is a common denominator with a six-speed manual available on the 110kW and 140kW variants. All-wheel drive is optional on the 140kW model, and standard on the range-topping 176kW iteration.

Australia

The new Arteon goes on sale in Europe from mid-June, and is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms from October this year.
