2003-2005 Toyota Corolla recalled for airbag fix

20,000 vehicles affected

Toyota has issued a recall for 20,129 of its previous-generation 2003 to 2005 Corolla hatches and sedans over concerns the vehicles could be fitted with faulty airbag inflators.

According to the Japanese manufacturer, the front driver's airbag inflator has been assembled with propellant wafers that are subject to density reduction caused by repeated volume change, occurring after prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

If the condition occurs, the airbag could rupture when deployed, posing a risk of injury to the vehicle's occupants in the event of a collision.

The recalled 'ZZE122' and 'ZZE123' Corolla models were produced in South Africa from March 2003 through October 2005. A VIN list for these vehicles can be viewed here.

Toyota Australia has confirmed with CarAdvice that this notice is not a Takata-related airbag recall.

Owners of the affected cars will be contacted via mail, though replacement parts won't be available until the fourth quarter of 2017.

Recall work will commence once the parts become available, and will be carried out free of charge.
