2017 Renault Captur unveiled ahead of Geneva debut – UPDATE

Facelifted baby SUV gains stylish new additions

The 2017 Renault Captur has been revealed ahead of its international debut at next week's Geneva motor show.

The French brand's small SUV has been revamped with a range of changes inside and out, in a move that Renault will hope see the Captur remain on the shopping list for compact crossovers - locally, we're talking: in Europe it was the biggest selling model in that segment last year, with a huge 215,670 sales.

The facelifted model comes almost four years after the Captur went on sale globally, and it brings updates to its styling such as new LED headlights on some models with C-shaped LED daytime running lights integrated into the lower bumper. The rear lights, too, are LED and have a similar design.

The grille has been redesigned to make it look more like the bigger Kadjar (not sold here), with a chrome strip highlight. There are skid plates on the front and rear bumpers, too. There are four new wheel options available - two 16-inch designs, and two 17-inch spinners. For those who like to let the light shine in, there's a new optional fixed glass roof.

The brand's bent for lots of personalisation continues, with the two-tone body remaining and two new body colours available - Atacama Orange and Ocean Blue - while there's a new roof colour option, Platinum Grey. The company has 30 different body/roof colour combos to choose from. There are exterior packs for the wheel bolts and door panel strips in five different colours (Ivory, Ocean Blue, Cappuccino, Red and Atacama Orange).

Inside there are six packs to choose in different themes and colours - Ivory, Ocean Blue, Caramel, Red, Satin Chrome and Patina Chrome.

No further details have been announced, so we'd expect the engine range - a 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbocharged powerplant with a five-speed manual gearbox, or a 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with a six-speed dual-clutch auto - will continue.

Australia

UPDATE: Renault Australia has confirmed the new-look Captur will arrive "later this year", but "the specific timing will be dependent on its availability for our market". We reckon it'll be here within six months.

While the Captur has been a sales success in Europe, the French high-rider hasn't seen the same fortune here. In 2016 it saw 1563 sales, just 1.6 per cent of the small SUV segment.
