Lamborghini Huracan Performante claims Nurburgring lap record – video

Track-focused bull to be revealed on March 7

The upcoming Lamborghini Huracan Performante has claimed the fastest production car lap record at the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife ahead of its global reveal at the Geneva motor show.

Lapping the German circuit in 6 minutes and 52.01 seconds, the Huracan Performante was nearly five whole seconds quicker than the previous production record holder, the Porsche 918 Spyder.

The hardcore Huracan is also over seven seconds quicker than Lamborghini's own flagship, the Aventador SV - which lapped the Nurburgring in 6 minutes and 59.73 seconds.

In the accompanying YouTube video (above), the Performante can be seen charging down the main straight reaching 304km/h.

Helping the Performante achieve its record lap was Lamborghini test driver, Marco Mapelli (top), who also achieved the Aventador SV's sub-seven minute time in 2015.

The record was set on 5 October 2016, which explains why Maurizio Reggiani, head of research and development at Lamborghini, was so confident in the Performante's circuit-lapping abilities in January.

Details of the car's powertrain are still yet to be confirmed, though the Performante's active aero package was detailed earlier this week.

Stay tuned for our coverage of the Lamborghini Huracan Performante's reveal on March 7 at the 2017 Geneva motor show this week.
