Nissan issues recall for Pulsar and Patrol for airbag fault

Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) has issued a recall notice for just two cars affected by an airbag defect. Although not explicitly named by Nissan, the airbag fault mirrors that of the worldwide Takata airbag scandal.

The affected cars are a Y61 Nissan Patrol and an N16 Nissan Pulsar with Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) JN1CBAN16A0018390 and JN1TFSY61A0330012.

A Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) spokesperson confirmed to CarAdvice both affected vehicles were built in August, 2011.

The two affected vehicles are fitted with faulty passenger airbag inflators which could allow moisture to enter, causing the propellant in the inflator units to deteriorate. Deterioration of the propellant may lead to abnormal deployment of the passenger airbag or metal fragment scatter, which poses a risk of injury to the occupants of the vehicle.

Nissan has advised the owners of affected vehicles to contact their Nissan dealer to arrange for a no-cost replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator.
