2017 Ford Fiesta ST revealed with new three-cylinder turbo engine
Three- and five-door models confirmed, but still no auto?
It is regarded as arguably the best bang-for-your-buck hot-hatch on the market, but the new 2017 Ford Fiesta ST is set to be a vastly different offering to its predecessor when it is unveiled at the 2017 Geneva motor show.
The new Ford Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 147kW of power and 290Nm of torque, up 13kW and 50Nm over the standard outputs of the four-cylinder model, but identical to the 'overboost' numbers that can be churned out for up to 20 seconds.
The updated model retains its six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel-drive layout - there's no word yet on an optional automatic gearbox - but the stick-shift has a 0-100km/h claim of 6.7 seconds - down 0.2sec over the existing four-cylinder version.
The new engine is also expected to see fuel use drop from the current 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres to about 5.2L/100km (to be confirmed), and the new engine even features world-first cylinder deactivation for a three-pot engine.
New to the Fiesta ST are Drive Modes that alter the engine response, steering calibration and stability control settings, with Normal, Sport and Track modes available. The Drive Modes will also adjust the car's new exhaust noise, and the Fiesta ST's Electronic Sound Enhancement system that pipes noise into the cabin. There's also an "enhanced torque vectoring control technology" that can brake the inside front wheel when cornering.
One of the biggest criticisms of the Ford Fiesta ST is the fact it is only available with three doors (in Australia at least: the US gets a five-door version), but the company has confirmed the new model will have three- and five-door body styles in Europe, so if it comes to Australia we can potentially expect the more practical model to be offered.
As for styling, gets a new mesh grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, and there's a new colour - seen in these shots - called Liquid Blue. There's also an available sunroof with extended full glass roof.
Inside, the cockpit gains a new 8.0-inch touchscreen media system with the brand's Sync 3 interface and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, as well as Recaro sports seats and flat-bottomed steering wheel. Based on the images seen here, buyers can expect dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a Bang & Olufsen Play sound system on offer.

CarAdvice has contacted Ford Australia to ascertain details of the launch timing for the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST - but at this stage the brand hasn't even confirmed the updated regular Fiesta for Australia.
