Jaguar has partnered with fuel company Shell to launch the world's-first in-car cashless payment system, allowing owners to pay for fuel via the vehicle's infotainment system.

Part of the recently-announced 2018 model-year updates for the F-Pace SUV along with the XE and XF sedans, the new Shell app allows Jaguar owners to use PayPal or Apple Pay through their car's touchscreen to pay for fuel at Shell service stations.

The app also allows for company-car users to log journeys and receipts through the infotainment system, and offers the convenience of not having to leave passengers (particularly children) unattended in the car to pay for fuel.

"With this new system you can choose any pump on the forecourt and pay for the fuel even if you’ve forgotten your wallet or can’t find your credit or debit card," said Peter Virk, director of connected car and future technology at Jaguar.

"Expenses and tax returns will also be made much simpler, with no receipts to lose as these will all be sent electronically."

The new technology will also rollout across the wider Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) line-up, so expect the Shell app to be launched for models like the new Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in the near future.

JLR plans to use similar technology in the future for car parks and drive-through restaurants, like McDonald's for example.

Speaking with CarAdvice, James Scrimshaw, product public affairs manager at Jaguar Land Rover Australia, said the company does plan to offer the new Shell app locally, however the rollout here will be a little while after Europe - which will commence when the updated 2018 range arrives later this year.

Scrimshaw did say, however, that a launch next year was likely, though an exact date could not be confirmed at this stage.
