Kia Niro to get Hyundai Ioniq electric powertrain in 2018 – report

The Kia Niro hybrid SUV sold in the US and Europe is set to get an all-electric variant next year, according to a new report.

An article by Dutch publication AutoRai, translated by Carscoops quotes the company's European CEO, Michael Cole, saying the Niro EV will use the running gear of the all-electric version of the Hyundai Ioniq.

The Ioniq Electric is powered by an 88kW/295Nm electric motor driving the front wheels via a single-speed transmission.

It claims a driving range of around 250km on a full charge, with a top speed rated at 165km/h.

Underneath the Ioniq Electric is fuelled by a 28kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack.

Expect similar figures from Kia's Niro equivalent, including the fast charging system which can fill the battery to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes with a 50kW connection.

While an exact reveal date wasn't confirmed by Kia's European boss, a presentation during 2018 was mentioned.
