Volkswagen Australia rejects lower CO2 engine

Volkswagen Australia will not offer the company's new low-emission 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine when the updated 2017 Golf arrives on July 3, having opted instead to retain the familiar 1.4-litre 110 TSI in its place

The German brand's local arm cites the higher cost of the newly developed engine, which it says would require it to pass on an unsatisfactory price hike to its buyers here. Given our emissions requirements are much less stringent than those in Europe, it was deemed uneconomic.

The newly developed 1.5 TSI engine actually makes the same power and torque as the extant 1.4, being 110kW between 5000 and 6000rpm, and 250Nm between 1500 and 3500rpm, so Australians are not being duped in terms of performance. The claimed 0-100km/h time is 8.2 sec.

Where the 1.5 TSI narrowly edges the 1.4 TSI engine we'll get is emissions. The new unit uses as little as 4.9L/100km of 95 RON on the combined-cycle, equating to CO2 emissions of as little as 112g/km with the DSG. By comparison the 1.4 uses 5.2L/100km and emits 119g/km.

The new engine has features such as cylinder deactivation, reduced internal friction, increased injection pressures, a new indirect intercooler and revised thermal management.

On the plus side, the 1.4 110TSI engine will replace the detuned 92TSI as the new entry engine in the Golf, being offered at base, Comfortline and Highline spec levels matched to a seven-speed DSG or six-speed manual (the latter as entry level only).

In return, expect a price increases of a few hundred dollars for the base Golf, taking the price to somewhere between $23,000 and $24,000 plus on-road costs.

Other engines that will be offered are the 2.0-litre 110 TDI diesel with 110kW/340Nm matched to a redesigned seven-speed DSG (an extra ratio), plus the new GTI with its 2.0-litre EA888 engine with 169kW/350Nm (matching the old GTI Performance, which now jumps to 180kW).

These, plus the new Golf R, upscaled to 213kW/380Nm for Australia (detuned from 221kW in Europe) matched to a 4Motion AWD system.
