Lamborghini Aventador fuel tank recall: This could get expensive – UPDATE

Update – Automobili Lamborghini has confirmed to CarAdvice that the voluntary recall relates to 5873 vehicles globally, and 104 vehicles locally. See bottom of article for details.

A significant and hugely expensive assortment of Lamborghini Aventador models have been recalled, due to a potential fire risk stemming from the exotic cars' fuel tank.

Affecting 5873 2012 to 2017 model year Lamborghini Aventador Coupes and Roadsters globally, and 104 vehicles locally, the recall relates to fuel possibly reaching the vehicle’s carbon canister, if the fuel tank is overfilled and “particular handling conditions” occur.

According to the official recall notice on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) product safety recalls website, “If this occurs, it may stop the EVAP [Evaporative Emission Control] system from managing fuel vapours correctly, potentially allowing them to make contact with hot gases from the engine, especially if a non-approved aftermarket exhaust system is fitted.”

“If the gases and fuel vapours make contact, there is a risk of fire,” the notice says.

Although Automobili Lamborghini Asia Pacific has now confirmed that 104 vehicles are affected locally, the offical ACCC notice also mentions that super-rare and exclusive models such as the LP720-4 50° Anniversario, Miura Homage, LP700-4 Pirelli Edition, LP750-4 Superveloce, Veneno Coupe and Veneno Roadster (pictured above), and Aventador J models are also included in the recall, which globally, now stands at 5873 vehicles.

All affected owners can expect to be contacted by Lamborghini directly by mail, and in the meantime, are recommended to contact their nearest Lamborghini dealer to arrange an inspection. Automobili Lamborghini Asia Pacific has now also confirmed to CarAdvice, that a new EVAP system will be fitted to affected cars, with the change over estimated to take one to two days to complete.

Although any Lamborghini is often out of the price range of we mere mortals, the 6.5-litre V12-powered Aventador (recently facelifted) sits atop the Raging Bull’s model tree, with prices starting at $761,500 (before on-road costs) for a Coupe and $795,000 (before on-road costs) for a Roadster, and hitting $925,300 (before on-road costs) for an LP750-4 Superveloce convertible. As for the multi-million-dollar one-off special editions, well… yikes.

Update: In an official media statement, Automobili Lamborghini confirmed the voluntary recall of model year 2012 to 2017 Aventador Coupe and Aventador Roadster models.

According to the statement: “Fuel vapour treatment (EVAP) system components fault could cause fuel vapours to be not treated properly. With not properly treated fuel vapour, particular manoeuvres, as example engine over-revving at idle, could imply contact between fuel vapour and hot gasses. Especially if combined with a not-approved aftermarket exhaust system, this could lead to risk of fire.

“In order to guarantee customer satisfaction, owners of the vehicles affected are being notified and requested to contact an authorised Lamborghini dealer in order to have the fuel evaporative system upgraded to the latest version.”
