Volvo XC40 launch confirmed for 2017, EV coming in 2019

The new Volvo XC40 crossover will be launched this year, as will a replacement for the XC60.

Henrik Green, Volvo's research and development boss, has confirmed to Autocar that the new XC40 crossover will make its debut this year.

The XC40 will be the first model in the fourth-generation 40-Series range, and will also be the first Volvo to use the company's new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

Developed with parent company Geely, CMA will not only be used under any subsequent Volvo 40-Series models, but will also underpin vehicles sold under Geely's new Lynk & Co brand.

In Green's opinion, the XC40, which is designed to tackle the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, has a "big chance [to] be one of the most successful cars in [the Volvo] lineup".

Styling for the new XC40 was previewed with last year's Concept 40.1, and will boost the number of crossovers in the Volvo's range to three.

2017 will be a busy year for the Swedish brand, as it will also launch the second-generation XC60, which is currently Volvo's most popular model. Once the XC60 is out, Volvo will launch replacements for the closely related S60 sedan and V60 wagon.

After that, the Swedish marque will focus its engineering attention on its first fully electric vehicles, which is due on the market in 2019. Green says that this new EV will "not [be] a one off".
