BMW snags Veyron designer

The man responsible for the polarising design of the now legendary Bugatti Veyron, Jozef Kaban, will now head up design for the BMW brand.

Reporting to BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk, the 44-year-old Slovakian designer will take the lead on styling all models that form part of the core BMW range, but not Mini or Rolls-Royce.

The Veyron clearly stands out as a highlight of his work, but Kaban was also responsible for exterior design on the new Skoda Octavia, Fabia and Kodiaq, along with the VW Lupo and Seat Arosa.

Kaban begin his career at VW, first as a design assistant for Audi, later becoming chief exterior designer for the four-ringed brand. Before joining BMW, Kaban was head of exterior design for the Skoda brand.

Kaban's hire is not the only change in the group's design team, with his predecessor Domagoj Dukec now responsible specifically for the BMW i and BMW M brands.

The 41-year-old has worked with Volkswagen in the past, but also Citroen, where he designed the C4 Coupe, C5 Airscape, C5 Mark 2, Hypnos, and the GQ concept. He joined BMW in 2010.

Dukec became head of exterior design for the BMW brand in 2013, and has already worked on the i brand, but he will now focus exclusively on the brand's greenest and meanest models.

The Mini brand remains bereft of a design chief, with former head Anders Warming leaving the company in July last year.
