Range Rover Sport Velar: Tapered SUV heading to Geneva – report

The recently spied new Range Rover model, believed to be named Velar, could be revealed as soon as the Geneva motor show in March.

According to the UK's Autocar, the new coupe-inspired SUV will slot between the Evoque and Sport - further fuelling rumours that it will essentially be an 'Evoque XL'. The website also believes the Velar name will be revived, having previously been used on original Range Rover prototypes in the late 1960s.

The British publication adds the new model will likely share many of its components with the Jaguar F-Pace.

Considering its forecast positioning between the Evoque and Sport, the Velar will likely compete across both the medium and large segments, putting it in contention with the likes of the BMW X4/X6 along with the Mercedes-Benz GLC/GLE Coupes and Porsche Macan.

Despite its more sporting intentions, the Velar is understood to retain a generous ground clearance, along with short front and rear overhangs to maintain the brand's reputation for class-leading off-road ability - though, like the F-Pace and Evoque, it won't have low-range gearing.

Under the bonnet, expect a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines shared with the F-Pace, along with the possibility of the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 from the Range Rover Sport SVR.

It's also possible the Velar could offer an all-electric variant somewhere down the line, shared with the upcoming Jaguar I-Pace - which would make it the company's first EV - along with a plug-in hybrid version.

Prototypes for the upcoming SUV coupe have been spied testing in recent months (pictured), giving us a hint of what it may look like in the flesh. However, the heavy disguise - including false panels at the rear - conceal the majority of the so-called Velar's physical details.

Land Rover is yet to confirm whether the new model will be shown in Geneva or whether it will wear the Velar name, so we'll have to wait until March to see if these claims turn out to be true.
