2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate revealed for Geneva show

New super wagon is faster than an Audi RS6 Avant

Fast, meet practical: that's the general message being sent by the bahnstorming new 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate.

The new super wagon from Mercedes-AMG has been revealed ahead of its international motor show debut in Geneva in March, and it'll be touting some pretty serious numbers when it lands there.

We're talking about a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which, in E63 S specification, pumps out a massive 450kW of power and 850Nm of torque.

That's enough to propel this version of the hyper wagon to 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds, which is 0.2sec quicker than the fastest Audi RS6 Avant, and just 0.1sec slower than the AMG E63 S sedan.

The E63 S’s top speed is rated at 250km/h, or 300km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package. There's a less potent version, the non-S E63, which has a wimpy 420kW of power and 750Nm of torque and a 0-100km/h time of 3.6sec.

All E63 versions are offered exclusively with a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with power sent to all four wheels. The engine has a cylinder deactivation mode, where it will run on four cylinders between 1000-3250rpm in Comfort mode, and its claimed fuel use is said to be 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

As for bodywork changes, the E63 wagon is 27 millimetres wider across the arches to accommodate its broader track. Speaking of the track, there's a drift mode for the all-wheel drive system, so rear-drive lovers needn't be concerned.

Australia

Mercedes-Benz's local arm has confirmed that it will not be offering the new E-Class super wagon locally due to a lack of potential customers. As a result, the Mercedes-AMG E63 sedan will be the only version offered.

Indeed, Australia won't see any E-Class wagons apart from the new E-Class All-Terrain model, because the brand has numerous SUV offerings to please potential wagon buyers. We just wonder whether there could be an E63 version of the All-Terrain... well, Audi did an RS6 Alltrack, right? (Err, no.)
