Alfa Romeo Giulia coupe set for Geneva debut

It now seems almost certain Alfa Romeo will unveil a two-door coupe version of its mid-sized Giulia sedan at the Geneva motor show in March. It will undoubtedly revive the classic 'Sprint' nameplate and will likely to be revealed alongside a two-door convertible version.

Rumours of a Giulia coupe have been circulating for some time and with the global release of the four-door range, which launches in Australia this month, the timing is ideal for more a sporting take on the range as Alfa Romeo tries to position itself against the established German premium players.

At this week's local launch of the Giulia QV halo model, Fiat Chrysler Australia refused to comment on future product, if perhaps fuelling the fire by intimating any convertible version of Giulia in the pipeline would most certainly adopt a two-door format.

Rivals Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all offer mainline mid-sized coupes in their respective A5, 4 Series and C-Class ranges, as well as performance and high-performance versions. It's expected Alfa Romeo will follow suit, eventually releasing two-door variants across the four-tier Giulia range.

A flag-ship Quadrifoglio version, powered by the sedan's 375kW/600Nm 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6, perfectly fits the current upmarket push FCA calls the "Alfa renaissance" and would offer a halo model to counter BMW's M4, the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe and Audi's future RS5.

Mid-range versions would be powered by the same petrol and diesel engines in the current Giulia line up.

As with the coupe formula adopted by Germany's so-called Big Three, it's expected two-door versions could well represent around 20 per cent of total future Giulia volumes, with pricing up to around 20 per cent higher than equivalent four-door sedans.

It's possible a wagon version of the Giulia may be in the pipeline too, though there is little indication such a body style will lob in the short term. That said, Alfa Romeo has promised a total of eight models by 2020 spun off the Giorgio platform currently used by Giulia and the forthcoming Stelvio SUV.
