2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia pricing and specs

Italy's 3 Series rival touches down

Australian pricing for the full 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia range has been revealed today, as part of the premium Italian mid-sizer's local launch.

Local buyers got their first look at the new 3 Series and C-Class rival in December, with the 2017 Giulia revealed as the centrepiece of a newly unveiled Alfa Romeo showroom in Melbourne.

Now, the Italian marque has confirmed the range will kick off from $59,895 with the eponymous Giulia model. (All prices exclude on-road costs.)

At the other end of the range will sit the heroic Quadrifoglio, confirmed in early January with a $143,900 starting price. That unit will enter as Alfa's challenger to the Mercedes-AMG C63 and BMW M3.

In between will sit the Giulia Super, available in $64,195 2.0-litre turbo petrol and $65,895 2.2-litre turbo diesel forms, and the quicker $71,895 2.0-litre turbo petrol Veloce.

The Giulia is an all-new player in the mid-sized premium market, but, having achieved the highest-ever adult occupant protection score with European crash-testing body Euro NCAP, it arrives in good stead.

The entry-level Giulia model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 147kW of power and 330Nm of torque.

The 0-100km/h run is listed at a sharp 6.6 seconds, with fuel use rated at 6.0L/100km on the combined cycle.

Among the Giulia's safety features are autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning.

Standard kit in the entry model includes leather trim, 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, keyless start, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, automatic wipers, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Other features include selectable driving modes, a 7.0-inch TFT driver's information display in the instrument cluster, Fiat Chrysler's UConnect 6.5-inch infotainment system with DAB+ digital radio and Bluetooth, and eight speakers.

Stepping up to the Giulia Super gives you the choice of two engines: the same 147kW/330Nm 2.0-litre petrol offered in the Giulia, or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel unit that produces 132kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

The diesel sprints from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds and sips fuel at a rate of 4.2L/100km.

The Super also gets higher-grade leather that extends to the dash and doors, an eight-way powered driver's seat, adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, and blind-spot monitoring.

Next up in the range is the sporty Giulia Veloce, powered by an uprated version of the 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit, producing 206kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

The 0-100km/h run takes 5.8 seconds while fuel use is rated at 6.1L/100km on the combined cycle.

Justifying the Veloce's role as the sporty model are adaptive suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, 19-inch Veloce alloy wheels and performance brakes with red calipers.

Inside, the Veloce variant gets aluminium trim inserts and pedals, along with leather-trimmed sports seats, steering wheel, and a premium sound system.

At the business end of the range is the Giulia Quadrifoglio, arriving with the honour of holding the production sedan lap record at the Nurburgring race track.

Under the bonnet is a Ferrari-developed 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 375kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

Sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, the Giulia Quadrifoglio is plenty quick, topping out at 305km/h. An eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters sends drive to the rear wheels.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio's engine also features cylinder-deactivation technology, allowing the super sedan to achieve a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.2L/100km.

Standard on the top-shelf Alfa Romeo sedan are 19-inch forged alloy wheels, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, automatic high beam, aluminium and carbon-fibre trim highlights, leather and Alcantara sports seats with contrasting stitching, a 14-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, and a 8.8-inch infotainment system.

Watch for our Australian first-drive review of the Giulia Quadrifoglio to come on February 8, with the wider range to follow.

Alfa Romeo will reveal further details on the Giulia's servicing costs and schedule alongside the February 8 review date.
