2017 Opel Grandland X spied in the snow

An SUV prototype believed to be the upcoming 2017 Opel Grandland X has been spied during cold weather testing this week, giving us a first glimpse at the company's upcoming CX-5 rival.

If you're thinking these photos look familiar, it's because the Grandland X look very similar to the DS 7 Cross prototype that was spotted in the same place earlier in the week.

Like the French crossover spied before it, the Opel Grandland X isn't giving many hints in terms of its design, thanks to the large amounts of black-and-white camouflage concealing the new SUV's lines.

The similarities don't stop there, it's reported that the Grandland X and DS 7 are essentially the same car underneath, along with the Peugeot 3008 - which will arrive in Australia in the coming months.

Poking through the front of the disguise, however, are parts of the grille and headlights, which help distinguish this vehicle as an Opel, compared to the completely-covered DS 7.

The Grandland X is the second crossover to come from General Motors's (GM) European arm this year, with the smaller Crossland X already revealed a fortnight ago - also sharing its roots with next-generation French models, the Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Picasso.

In terms of powertrains, the Grandland X is likely to share the majority, if not all of its engines with the Peugeot 3008, which offers a range of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

The Opel Grandland X is confirmed to make its debut sometime later this year, though exact timing is still to be detailed.

Australia

It's too early to know whether the Grandland X will make it here, though it could serve as Holden's entrant into the booming medium SUV segment, which is dominated by the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson.

Of course, with the recently revealed Equinox already confirmed for Holden, playing in that same market space, it remains to be seen if the Grandland X has a place in our market. The Equinox is undoubtedly longer than the Grandland X, however, so there could be space for both.

Holden isn't saying, but we may yet see the Grandland X here as one of the 24 new and refreshed models the company plans to launch by 2020.

GM's local arm has already ruled out the smaller Crossland X, as the Holden Trax already competes in the compact SUV segment.
