Ford GT power and performance figures revealed

In the mother of all teaser campaigns, Ford has now revealed outputs and the top speed for its V6-powered hero, a full two years since it was first revealed.

Initially, Ford had confirmed only that the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 rumbling away behind the cabin would produce around 450kW, sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle design.

That was in January, 2015. Almost a year later, in September, XBox racing simulator Forza Motorsport 6 listed the playable GT with 470kW and 731Nm of torque. Was that a guess, or an early leak?

The team at Turn 10 were close, it turns out. The final figures? A sizeable 475kW of power and 745Nm of torque, with 90 per cent of the latter available from 3500rpm.

So, while the ~US$400,000 GT is no LaFerrari rival - and Ford isn't pretending it is - this project has at least resulted in the most powerful application yet of any of its EcoBoost engines.

“Our expectation has always been that the EcoBoost V6 would perform exceptionally well in the Ford GT - both in terms of power as well as aerodynamic efficiency,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance.

“We tested and developed this powertrain through the Daytona Prototype race car that ran in IMSA for two seasons, last season racing with Ford GT. We are extremely pleased with how it performs, both on the track and on the road.”

As a result, and thanks to every other aspect of its build, the GT claims a quicker time around Canada's Calabogie Motorsports Park than the McLaren 675LT and Ferrari 458 Speciale.

The 458 Speciale, powered by a naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8, developed 445kW and 540Nm - the latter available from a much higher 6000rpm, as one would expect. The 675LT, more powerful than both, is driven by a 497kW/700Nm twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8, the latter from 5000rpm.

Ford specifies both as direct rivals, along with the newer 488 GTB. It's worth noting, though, that a 488 Speciale would be on the horizon by now, and McLaren has already started dropping teasers for its next-generation platform.

Ford is also dancing about the GT's top speed, confirmed at 216mph, or 347km/h - another record for the EcoBoost engine family.

For its own reasons - possibly that it isn't as quick - Ford hasn't revealed how fast the GT will hit 100km/h. For your reference, Ferrari claims 3.0 seconds and McLaren, 2.9 seconds.
