2018 DS 7 Cross spied testing

A heavily-disguised prototype believed to be the new DS 7 Cross SUV has been spied this week during cold weather testing.

The swathes of black-and-white camouflage don't give much away in terms of the vehicle's design, but we can make out the general proportions, raised ride height and chunky bumpers common to SUVs.

The disguise is so heavy you can't even see the head- or tail-lights clearly - DS is definitely trying to keep the DS 7 Cross's design under wraps (if you'll forgive the pun).

DS, Citroen's premium arm, is set to expand its line-up in the coming years since becoming a stand-alone brand, and like its competitors out of Germany, the focus will be on SUV models.

In 2014 the brand revealed the DS 6WR, its first SUV, at the Beijing motor show. However, this model was reserved for the Chinese market.

It's likely the DS 7 Cross, or whatever it will be called (some reports claim it will be called the DS X), will be the French marque's first standalone SUV model to be sold in Europe and other global markets. The DS 4 Crossback was technically DS's first SUV model outside of China.

In terms of the new model's underpinnings, it's believed the DS 7 Cross will ride on the PSA Group's EMP2 platform, which already forms the basis of several models including the Peugeot 308, 3008 and the Citroen C4 Picasso.

The DS 7 Cross will reportedly serve as the Peugeot 3008's premium cousin - think Toyota RAV4 and Lexus NX - and will be produced at the company's Mulhouse factory in France.

It's unknown what will power the new SUV, though its family ties with the Peugeot 3008 suggest it will offer a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, in three- and four-cylinder configurations.

Known internally as the 'X74', DS's new mid-size SUV is speculated to make its debut at this year's Geneva motor show in March, though, the company may wait until the Frankfurt motor show in September.

In terms of its Australian potential, the rapid growth of SUV sales here makes the DS 7 Cross a candidate to join Citroen and DS's local line-up, though we'll have to wait until the model's official reveal for any indication of whether it's coming Down Under.
