Huracan Performante:: New hero Lambo will top the Aventador SV’s Nurburgring time
Maurizio Reggiani, head of research and development at Lamborghini has told Australian media this week the camouflaged Huracan we’ve seen spy shots of during testing at the Nurburgring will deliver a lap time that will ‘amaze’ enthusiasts.
“For me, Nurburgring is like a benchmark, we achieved much more than I expected,” Reggiani said, speaking this week at the first drive of the new Aventador S.
“It is something that is unique and fantastic for us, and the time will be better than the Aventador [SV].”
Set to be revealed at the upcoming Geneva motor show, it is likely the tuned Huracan will be called ‘Performante’ - rather than the ‘Superleggera’ previously reported.
Regardless of the name, it will be capable of stunning track performance. If the Huracan Performante can indeed better the sub seven-second time of the Aventador SV, there is the potential that it can also dip below the time of the Porsche 918 Spyder, which lapped The Green Hell in less than 6:57.
With Reggiani all but confirming the Huracan did in fact better the lap time set by the Aventador SV, the entry-level Lamborghini with special aero tweaks could potentially sit with the fastest production cars of all time at the famed German track. The three fastest cars around the Nurburgring currently are two different Radicals and the aforementioned Porsche 918.
While the revised Huracan will certainly be lighter than the less hardcore version on sale now, it is the rumoured special aero improvements that will make all the difference to the Nurburgring lap time.
“I can say that we discovered something that [will be] big news,” Reggiani said. “It is something we don’t use [yet] on road cars, we created it.”
Reggiani is a man revered for his ability to sculpt carbon-fibre and create new ways of using it in innovative fashion, and the new Huracan will benefit from his team’s expertise.
While he wouldn’t confirm details, it appears the Huracan Performante will make use of even lighter carbon-fibre bodywork and removal of metal structural members in favour of more carbon fibre, which could shed around 100kg from the current car. The engine will also generate more power than the current 5.2-litre unit, which pumps out 448kW and 560Nm.
Lamborghini boss, Stefano Domenicali, a man with a long history in F1, is understandably enthused by this rapid Huracan.
“For vehicle manufacturers, the Nurburgring is our equivalent of the church of rock and roll,” Domenicali said. “For sure it has been a reference for all manufacturers. To be there and to be strong is very important. It is important to give credibility to a product or story and for us it is good to always remind our team to challenge ourselves against the others.”
The revised Huracan will be launched at the 2017 Geneva motor show.
