2016-17 Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque recalled: Owners urged to park away from property

Land Rover has issued a recall for 797 of its 2017 model-year Discovery Sport and 2016-17 model-year Range Rover Evoque SUVs fitted with the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and automatic transmission, over concerns a wiring fault could cause several issues including loss of electric steering, engine cut-out, or even a fire.

The British manufacturer reports the engine harness may have been routed incorrectly and as a result could contact the water charge air cooler bracket.

If the condition occurs, vibration of the engine could cause chafing that results in the outer sheath of the cable wearing through and exposing the wires of the engine harness.

Depending on the location of the chafing, electrical arcing and short circuit may occur, and a warning light on the instrument panel may illuminate.

As a result, there could be a loss of the electric steering system, the engine could cut-out without warning, engine parts could melt, smoke or even an under-bonnet fire.

The VIN ranges and number of affected units for each model line are as follows:

Discovery Sport - SALC2AN9HH633943 to SALCA2BN2HH653045 (497 vehicles)
Evoque - SALVA2BN2HH168185 to SALVA5BN3HH188706 (300 vehicles)

Vehicles affected by this notice were produced from 4 July 2016 through 10 October 2016.

Owners of the recalled vehicles will be contacted via mail, and are encouraged to take their Discovery Sport or Evoque to their local dealer to have their engine harness and water charge cooler bracket inspected, and if needed, repositioned, repaired or replaced.

Land Rover says until the vehicle is inspected, it is recommended it is parked outside, preferably away from other vehicles and property.

This latest notice is the third in a week for the Discovery Sport and Evoque, with two recalls issued last week for faulty left and right front suspension lower control arms.
