Great Wall, Haval sold a million cars last year

Chinese sister brands Haval and Great Wall may be minnows in Australia, but the company’s 2016 sales result globally is nothing to sneeze at.

According to the company’s figures, it sold more than a million Haval SUVs and Great Wall utes and passenger models last year, the vast majority obviously being in China.

The record annual total was 1,074,470 units, more than half of which were the new H6 medium crossover. For context, Haval/Great Wall’s figure for last year is greater than Peugeot’s 1.06 million global sales in 2015.

The top-seller was the Haval H6, which the company claims is China’s top-selling SUV. It sold a registered 580,683 units, placing it well ahead of the Haval H2 (196,926), H1 (69,232), H7 (48,903), H5 (23,299), H9 (11,504) and H8 (7471).

Meanwhile, the Great Wall Steed managed 105,621 units worldwide.

Haval sold only 286 vehicles in Australia last year, its first year on sale, comprising the H2 (132), H6 and H8 (57 apiece) and H9 (40). The just relaunched Great Wall managed 110 sales as it ramps up its 51-site dealer network, but expects 5000 annual sales soon. It sold 45,000 units here under its old distributor.

Expect a steady rollout of new product from Haval this year, including the H7 launch, and heavily updated versions of the H8 and H9 on the way. Expect also to see new base model Great Wall Steeds and a two-door cab-chassis derivative priced under $20,000.

Haval and Great Wall now sell vehicles all around the world, and recently opened a R&D centre in Japan. It is also looking at doing the same here in Australia.
