The 2018 Kia Stinger GT, which wowed crowds at the recent 2017 Detroit motor show, has touched down on local soil, unveiled today at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.
Kia has been the major sponsor of the Australian Open since 2002, and while the all-new Rio small car is also making its Australian debut at the event, the turbocharged, rear-wheel-drive Stinger is just a shade more exciting.
In top-specification GT guise, the rear-drive Stinger will pack a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 with over 270kW of power.
Teamed with a roomy and practical large-sedan wheelbase and liftback hatch, the Stinger has plenty of the right elements to win favour with Australian buyers, especially considering the rear-drive Holden Commodore will cease local production on October 20.
Unveiled by Kia ambassador, and 14-time tennis grand slam champion, Rafael Nadal, the white Stinger on display is still a pre-production version, with the first ‘real’ cars due to start arriving in Australia later this year.
The windows are blacked out to conceal the interior, but the exterior is closely matched to the cars seen at the world reveal only a week ago at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We expect the production cars to be nearly identical.
The Australian Open is on at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena and Melbourne Park venue until January 29. If you are visiting, take a look at the new Kia Stinger for yourself, and let us know what you think.
