Mercedes-AMG E63 Coupe and Convertible ruled out, hybrid E-Class AMG on its way?

The chances of a high-powered Mercedes-AMG E63 version of either the new-generation E-Class Coupe and future E-Class Cabriolet models is highly unlikely, CarAdvice can reveal.

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe was revealed at the 2017 Detroit motor show, where Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers told CarAdvice the company wasn’t planning to give the swoopy two-door the full go-fast treatment.

“That’s not finally decided,” Moers said. “As of now, no.

“We know what we will bring to the market with the E-Class Coupe, but not an E63,” he said. “That’s not a growing segment. We have a very performance-oriented C-Class Coupe and the very successful S-Class Coupe, and the question is always price – where is the price going to be for such a car.”

So it’s yes and no, then – there’s not much of a market for a fully-hot AMG model, but an AMG Performance variant, in other words a potential E43 version, is on the cards. And it could come with a high-tech new drivetrain, too.

Mercedes-Benz has announced it will offer a new straight-six engine, which will stand distinct from its V6 bi-turbo counterpart in the current SLC43GLC43 and C43 models.

But with the company’s new straight-six, it will be capable of dipping a proverbial toe into an eco-AMG mindset, with that drivetrain potentially offering 48-volt mild hybrid technology. That engine will first debut in the updated S-Class, due to be revealed in a few months.

“We just engineered our 43 line-up with the V6 in 2016,” Moers said.

When asked if the new straight-six engine is a long-term goal or more likely to appear under the bonnet of something sooner, Moers said: “It’s not that far away”.

“We will not have that car this year,” he said, indicating that a 2018 debut for the E43 model – or whatever it may be – is possible.

Indeed, Moers was asked if it would be the E43 or something else, to which he replied: “It could be both. We’ve made the decision.”

There have been reports that the brand will offer an E50 hybrid model, with that model said to boast 300kW of power and 500Nm of torque. That could theoretically sit alongside/above a potential E43 model which, based on the current V6's numbers would have 270kW and 520Nm.

For context, the new-generation all-wheel-drive E63 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which, in E63 S specification, pumps out a massive 450kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
