Skoda Kodiaq RS on the way, but sub-Octavia RS models won’t happen

The Skoda Kodiaq RS, a hot version of Skoda's largest car to date, is on the way, although it's not clear when it will make its debut.

Christian Strube, head of research and development at Skoda, confirmed in a chat with Evo that the Czech company will produce a performance version of the new Kodiaq crossover, which will, as expected, wear RS branding.

The Kodiaq RS will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel. This motor is currently used in the Volkswagen Tiguan, and there it generates 176kW of power, and 500Nm of torque between 1750 and 2500rpm.

In the Tiguan, the twin-turbo motor is capable propelling the SUV from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

What lies beyond the Kodiaq RS for the RS sub-brand isn't so clear though. Despite Strube enthusiasm for a Superb RS model, a performance version of the family hatch and wagon seems to be on hold.

And the research and development chief has confirmed to the magazine that Volkswagen's Czech subsidiary has been unable to come up with a compelling business case for RS models smaller than the Octavia.

That means that any plans for Fabia RS and Citigo RS models have been parked indefinitely. That's despite the fact that the Volkswagen Polo, the Fabia's twin under the skin, has a GTI variant, and Volkswagen is working on a GTI version of the Up, the Citigo's almost identical sibling.

Further out, Strube cautioned that developing and justifying performance RS models might get harder and harder thanks to tightening emissions regulations.
