Ford Bronco locked in for 2020

The iconic Ford Bronco will return to the Blue Oval brand's global stable in 2020, the company's US chief Joe Hinrichs confirmed today.

Ford chose the annual Detroit motor show to confirm the news, which has been suspected ever since United Auto Workers representative Bill Johnson let the cat out of the bag last October.

Not much is known yet. All Ford would say today was: "Bronco will be a no-compromise midsize 4x4 utility for thrill seekers who want to venture way beyond the city".

One might imagine some commonality with the F-150, which this year will receive a diesel engine for the first time, in the form of a 3.0-litre Power Stroke turbo V6.

However, it will instead almost certainly be based on the T6 architecture that underpins the Australian-developed Ranger, which will also launch in the US in 2019. Therefore there's an Australian connection, though the Bronco will be developed in the US.

We also know the Bronco will be manufactured at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, with production likely to start in 2019.

As we reported last year, Ford has pledged to launch four new nameplates into its global SUV line-up, in segments it doesn’t presently cover, by 2020.

Expect the Bronco to sport rugged styling, and to perhaps leverage the aluminium production pioneered by the F-150.

But what might a 2019 Ford Bronco look like? Our new friends at Bronco6G previously came up with a nifty rendering that, at the very least, is the fan-art equivalent of a popcorn flick. Those are the pictures we’ve used above.
