2017 Audi SQ5 debuts in Detroit with petrol power – UPDATE

UPDATE: See below for Australian details.

The 2017 Audi SQ5 has been unveiled in a surprise debut at the 2017 Detroit motor show.

The sportiest version of the Audi Q5, the all-new SQ5 ditches the bi-turbo diesel engine of its predecessor and is instead powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6 engine. There's no word on a diesel model yet, and the previous version had the option of both the diesel and a supercharged petrol V6 engine in some markets.

CarAdvice has reported previously a diesel version of the new-generation SQ5 was likely, with a high-tech electric turbocharger instead of a regular, mechanical huffer.

Either way, the 2017 Audi SQ5 3.0TFSI – with its lighter (by 14 kilograms) turbo engine – has a beefy 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque, with a claimed acceleration sprint time from 0-100km/h of 5.4 seconds.

Those figures mean the new SQ5 isn't as potent as its diesel predecessor sold in Australia, with that car offering up 230kW/650Nm and a sprint time of 5.1 seconds for the regular diesel model (and 250kW/700Nm for the SQ5 Plus).

Fuel use is rated at 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres, which again isn't as good as the diesel version (6.8L/100km). But with diesel being a bit of a dirty word, we're not surprised the new SQ5 is petrol instead.

It retains the quattro all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed automatic of its predecessor, while inside the changes to the regular Q5 have been carried over, but with the usual sporty additions.

There's Audi's Virtual Cockpit display in front of the driver's eyes which is complemented by an 8.3-inch media screen on top of the dashboard, and Audi's MMI touch-pad in front of the gear selector. There's also a new sporty steering wheel, quilted seats and some other styling accents around the cabin.

The Mexican-built model is expected to be comprehensively equipped when it arrives. German specs for the car include 20-inch wheels, S adaptive dampers, LED headlights, Alcantara/leather trimmed sports seats and more. In some markets, 21-inch wheels will be offered.

UPDATE: Australia

Audi Australia has confirmed that the new-generation Audi SQ5 3.0TFSI will be sold here, with deliveries commencing in the second half of this year. The regular Q5 line-up will be here about June 2017.

A company spokesperson has advised that there's no news on any diesel version at this point in time, saying "nothing has been announced".

The existing SQ5, which was priced from $92,600 for the standard version and $108,900 for the SQ5 Plus, was a big success here - at one point it accounted for more than a third of all Q5 sales.
