McLaren Automotive doubles sales in 2016

British supercar brand McLaren Automotive was one of the great success stories of 2016, almost doubling its global sales to 3286 units, up from 1654 the year before.

The 99.3 per cent improvement in sales followed the company’s announcement of a third consecutive year of profitability in 2015 and the production milestone of the company’s 10,000th car.

McLaren Automotive launched its Track22 six-year business plan, with 15 new cars or derivatives planned out to 2022. The second-generation McLaren Super Series in Geneva this March will kick things off.

The dramatic sales increase was thanks to growth across all regions and exceeded the company’s own expectations on the 2016 sales performance, previously estimated as 3000 cars.

In its first full year of production, the Sports Series family accounted for 2031 deliveries, the majority of which came from the recently-introduced McLaren 570GT and 570S models.

The Super Series did well thanks to the McLaren 675LT coupe and Spider models. In total, 1255 Super Series cars were sold in 2016.

Geographically, North America continued to be McLaren Automotive’s single largest market with deliveries of 1139 cars, a 106 per cent increase over 2015. Europe ended 2016 selling 996 cars in total, an increase of 153 per cent, whilst the rapidly-developing market in China sold 228 cars in total.

The Asia Pacific region grew by 90 per cent while the newly combined Middle East, Africa and Central and South America region grew by 69 per cent.

McLaren Australia sold 93 cars last year, up almost 160 per cent. By comparison, Lamborghini sold 127 and Ferrari 188.

In addition, the global footprint of the McLaren retailer network continued to grow with new dealer facilities opened in Bristol, Boston, Palm Beach (USA), Australia's Gold Coast and Fukuoka in Japan.

McLaren also managed to reinvest about 25 per cent of turnover into research and development for future products and technology.

Over the six-year Business Plan period, this represents an investment of £1 billion and will lead to the launch of 15 all-new cars or derivatives. Of these cars, at least 50 per cent will feature hybrid technology, a la the P1.

The business plan also includes the development of a fully-electric powertrain for a concept car to evaluate its possible use in a future Ultimate Series.

"2016 was a remarkable year for McLaren Automotive. We’d planned it to be a year of considerable growth, thanks to the first full year of Sports Series production, but it’s surpassed even our own optimistic expectations, having seen development in all regions," said McLaren Automative CEO Mike Flewitt.

Australia

Comment from McLaren Automotive Asia Pacific managing director George Biggs.

"We are very pleased with the strong demand for the McLaren Automotive brand in Australia as outlined in the VFACTS 2016 results. McLaren sales increased by 158.3 per cent year-on-year in Australia, demonstrating the high regard with which we are held by Australian sports car and supercar enthusiasts.

"The launch of the new Sports Series enabled the excitement of McLaren ownership for less than AU$400K drive away, and has been instrumental in building a wider and more diverse community of McLaren drivers.

"At the same time, the McLaren 675LT earned a reputation as the most thrilling supercar available today and sold out in record time. This strong growth in Australia enabled several key milestones in 2016, including the opening of a stand-alone showroom in Melbourne, and a new facility on the Gold Coast.

"Our ‘Track 22’ programme has committed an investment of GBP £1 billion into research and development over the next six years and we are excited about the future.

"... we announced that we will unveil the second generation of the Super Series at the Geneva Motor Show, and we are looking forward to bringing another groundbreaking McLaren product to our growing community of owners in Australia in 2017."
