2017 Toyota Corolla sedan pricing and specs: New looks, more kit and upgraded safety

Local pricing and specifications for the updated 2017 Toyota Corolla sedan range have been revealed this week.

After being revealed in "preview images" last March, the new sedan has finally landed in Australia, marking the 50th anniversary of the Japanese company's top-selling small car – the first-generation Corolla hit local showrooms in 1967.

For the new year Toyota has given the four-door Corolla a fresh look – with revised front- and rear-end treatments including new LED tail-lights – along with active safety features and more standard equipment across the range.

Headlining the updates are the availability of a pre-collision warning system with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning and automatic high beam.

These safety features are fitted as standard to the flagship ZR variant (above), and optional on the mid-tier SX ($750), and entry-level Ascent ($1500 bundled with 15-inch alloy wheels).

Other additions include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with access to Toyota Link apps for the Ascent, satellite navigation on the SX and bi-LED headlights for the top-of-the range ZR.

The entry-level Ascent also gains a 4.2-inch driver's information display.

Under the bonnet is the same 103kW/173Nm 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to either a six-speed manual or continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

Toyota says it has made revisions to the CVT which helps to deliver quicker, crisper shifts and improves acceleration off the line.

Larger-diameter shock absorbers on the front MacPherson struts and rear torsion-beam suspension systems are claimed to improve the four-door Corolla's ride and handling.

More sound deadening materials have also been added to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The new features come with minor price increases, however, with the Ascent starting $500 dearer than before ($21,240), the SX $830 pricier ($23,820), while the ZR is $930 more than the model it replaces ($31,920).

As before the updated Corolla sedan range is covered by Toyota's Service Advantage capped-price servicing scheme with scheduled maintenance costing $140 per visit for the first three years or 60,000km, whichever comes first.

Hatch update confirmed

In the coming week, Toyota will confirm details of the updated hatch range, which is also set to receive AEB amongst other new features. Stay tuned.
